There are a number of factors to consider when choosing an Ottawa elementary school for your children. When I grew up things were so much easier! Our parents just sent us off, on foot, to the nearest public school. Those were the days when we played outside all day and only came home for dinner!
Now, parents have a range of choices and decisions to make. In the city of Ottawa we can choose from public schools, catholic schools, Waldorf schools, Montessori schools, private schools, independent schools and faith based schools.
Before selecting the right school for your children there are some questions you need to ask yourself. The first one is; are you satisfied with the elementary schools in Ottawa? If not, then you need start researching your alternatives and decide what your goals are for your children and their education.
First, consider the location of the schools you want to visit.
Are they in your neighbourhood or farther away; Will your children need transportation to and from the school? Does the school offer bussing, carpooling, or will they be walking?
What about opportunities for socialization-an important consideration if you are considering private schools outside of your neighbourhood.
Another consideration is academic or social pressures–what will your children be faced with at school and how will they handle the various pressures?
Are there services and opportunities available at the school? Such as music and art instruction, after-school care, or programs for gifted students.
What about the safety and security of your children? How does the school address bullying and other violence? What does the school offer on a day to day basis to ensure the safety of children?
Is the school accredited? Although this is not an issue for Ottawa public schools it can be for Ottawa private and independent schools.
An important note though is that many private schools never seek accreditation. The curriculum taught though is fully accepted and recognized by higher-level institutions and often the students at most Ottawa private schools are able to enter the University of their choice.
Visit the schools that appeal to you and your children. Make sure your children are interested in the school an excited at the thought of attending. Once the application process begins they will be invited to spend a day at the school to make sure they fit in with the group. Remember, this is an investment in your future and your children’s – invest wisely.
If you have made the decision to enroll your child in an Ottawa private school, you have taken a step towards providing your child with the best possible education. The next step is to choose the right Ottawa school, and you have many private schools to consider. To learn more about the different options available visit http://www.ottawaprivateschools.com/

July 2009 are taught to manage risk, rather than avoid it. Everything is dangerous! says outdoor teacher Heidi Buvang. We motivate children to expand their limits, to try hanging from branches and climbing trees. Outdoor nurseries are trying to counteract concerns that childhood has become overprotected and believe external education makes children more creative and independent. Were competing with computer games, says Heidi, Its important to give children the desire to be outdoors.

Sign up for Collaborize Classroom, a free online learning platform at: collaborizeclassroom.com High School English Teacher Catlin Tucker Collaborize Classroom™ has allowed me to take my curriculum beyond the boundaries of my physical classroom. It provides each student with an equal voice and encourages in-depth discussions. Discussions limited to the confines of my classroom have always been lackluster. I have been continually frustrated by the lack of participation and depth of responses. From the moment I integrated Collaborize Classroom into my classroom curriculum, discussions have taken on a whole new significance. Students who rarely participated in class are some of the first to post their responses to our discussion questions online. Responses contain a depth and quality that I am not able to get from a real time classroom conversation. Collaborize Classroom challenges me as an instructor to design dynamic, thought provoking questions that will drive a rewarding conversation. I integrate the student’s postings into my classroom discussions as well. I use their online responses to summarize ideas in relation to a topic, provide closure at the end of a lesson/unit, or transition to another aspect of the text we are discussing. It also allows me to make connections between my English class and the other courses my students are taking. Real world connections are also easier to make. In the past I have done “free writes”/ “quick writes” in class which require …
